What are Contra- indications? Contra- indications are those instances where massage should be avoided, or carried out only under referral from your GP. There are two lists of Contra-indications; one which encompasses instances where I use my judgement as a professional, the other where you will specifically need written referral from your GP, as the conditions therein are more medically severe. I have only listed the main groups of these. There are rather more than can comfortably be fitted on the page with accompanying reasons. I like to keep things as brief as possible. I don't like to blind readers with too much info! Varicose Veins: Pressure on or below these will cause further dilation, thrombosis and formation of varicose ulcers. Varicose Ulcers: Brought on by poor venous drainage, pressure from below will cause worsening of the condition, and will also cause spread of infected fluids to other body areas. Phlebitis: Pressure on or below the site will cause an increase in venous pressure and will encourage the formation of thromboses. Contagious or infectious skin disease: An increase in the venous and lymphatic drainage will encourage spread to other parts of the body and skin lesions will be painful. There is also the added possibility of causing spread of infection by contact. Toxic blood disorders: Improving circulatory and lymphatic systems will encourage spread of infected blood to other systems in the body. Over Recent operations: Regenerating tissues should be allowed to heal following natural processes. Any pressure will damage delicate tissues at a critical time. Over recent scar tissue: New scars vary greatly from normal skin tissue. Any pressure will disrupt normal healing processes. Over inflamed areas Pressure. over inflamed areas: will force its spread through the lymphatic system to other areas and will also damage localised tissues. Any unexplained lump, swelling or severe pain: These should always be investigated by a qualified medical practitioner. Any bruised areas: This will cause pain and will damage underlying tissue, possibly causing ulceration and delaying natural healing. Also the possibility of spread of emboli. Thrombosis: Pressure can cause spread of emboli, a potentially life threatening condition. Slow release injections or patches: Massage around these areas could cause increased release of the drug leading to over-dosage. Over fractures: Pressure would cause pain and interfere with natural healing processes. Forced movement of tissues over roughened and damaged bone edges will cause further pain and force the healing process on too quickly, resulting in exaggerated calcium deposits formation, promising future problems. Massage contra indications for G P approval and reasons Angina: This is a medically treated condition affecting cardiac muscles and unusual alteration in circulatory supply or demand will cause adverse reactions and possible exacerbation. A very serious condition and needs to be treated with the greatest of care. Heart Defects: Massage alters the cardiovascular rate, which would compromise an existing cardiac condition. Hypertension : This is often a longstanding condition for which medication is given. Although not normally a contra indication, any massage resulting in sudden changes to the condition will cause cardiac shock and badly affect related body systems. Cancer Primary cancers should be contained if possible. The improvement of circulation and lymphatic drainage can maximise chances of the spread of carcinoma to other organs and body systems. Pregnancy- 1st 16 weeks: The uterus is particularly delicate and tissue friable at this time. In some women, the pressure of heavy exertion, a very full bladder, constipation or deep penetrative intercourse can cause miscarriage. The pressure of massage should therefore be avoided. Menstruation- 1st 3 days: The improvement of cardiovascular and lymphatic movement can increase the volume of bleeding during a period. Many women have accompanying abdominal pain at this time which would be worsened by massage. Diabetes: Diabetes is due to the Islets of Langahans not secreting Insulin, which is necessary for the correct breakdown of blood sugar. Massage has been known to cause unpredictable reactions. Only after careful monitoring of the situation should medication be adjusted if appropriate, preferably after consultation with your necessary specialist.
